Project Description

This series of images explores the effect of modernization on Xhosa people and their food culture by documenting the transition space between rural and urban areas. The images visually document Xhosa people living in Nelson Mandela Bay and outlying areas, specifically reflecting on how their traditions in terms of culture and cooking have been changed by contemporary influences and advancements in technology.

These photographs documenting the preparation and cooking of dishes have been taken in the houses of Xhosa families. Many of these families have adopted Western diets; in terms of convenience, ingredients and preparation methods and in some cases a mix between traditional and Western is evident.
